January Favorites

College has turned me into a slow reader, so I'm sorry I don't have a new book review for you. But! There will absolutely be one soon. I'm currently reading Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo and am planing on reviewing it as soon as I finish it. Since I'm not ready to write a review, but still wanted to have a new post, I thought I'd do another monthly favorites post.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
I started watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend because I'd been hearing author Rachel Hawkins raving about it and it seemed interesting. I started watching it a little less than a week ago and I finished the first season last night and I loved it. Towards the end of the first season, you start getting some second-hand embarrassment that tends to go along with sitcoms, but it's still overall great and really funny. Despite the title, it has some great feminism as well as LGBT representation, although you have to wait a little longer for that to be explicit, but you can see it coming if you're looking for it. It tackles things like competition between girls as well as friendship between women. I can't speak to the later seasons, but I can't wait until I get to watch them. It's definitely not perfect, but everyone should watch it.

Ariel Bissett
I don't generally watch a lot of booktube, but recently I started watching Ariel Bissett and I love her videos. She talks about books, poetry, and a lot of other things. She does vlogs, hauls, and book reviews. Her videos have a positive energy but without being annoyingly cheery and she also has a fantastic sense of humor. Her videos make me wish I knew her in real life.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
Rupi Kaur's poetry has been all over the internet recently. Most of the poems are very short and quotable. A lot of the poems are very simple, but they hit you like a punch to the gut. It's a pretty quick read so I've been taking it section by section because I don't want to finish it too quickly. Almost all of the poems don't have titles, so the book almost reads like one long poem.

2017 Favorites

This is going to be a round up of my favorite books, shows, and just general things of the year. I'm also going to include some of my hopes and goals for 2018.  Favorite Books of the Year The Star-Touched Queen  by Roshani Chokshi          This book was inspired by Hindu stories and tells the story of Maya who has been cursed by a bad horoscope her whole life. When she's 17, her father finally finds someone who is willing to marry her and she is whisked away to a kingdom like no other she has ever seen before.            The immediate description I think for this book is that it is absolutely beautifully written. The prose is gorgeously lyrical and richly written. Reading this book is a sensory experience like no other. I'm not someone who generally visualizes things as I was reading because that's not the way I think, but the details in this book were so beautiful and rich that I couldn't help but appreciate...

Senior Year

I start my senior year of high school on Monday. Despite the fact that I'm going to have more going on than ever this year and I already have a ton of deadlines looming, I'm not scared. I'm honestly more excited than anything else. My junior year was really hard for me academically and personally and had a huge impact on me. This summer has been exactly what I needed and lately I've been feeling like I'm finally myself again. I'm excited for school for the first time in a while and I feel like I've rediscovered what it was about myself that made me a straight-A student my first two years of high school and hopefully I'll be able to get those same grades again during my senior year even in my AP Calculus class. School makes me more motivated so I'm looking forward to getting back to studying and hopefully being able to put more energy into this blog.
