Finally

I finished In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken. I read it on and off for about a month which, considering my reading speed, is highly unusual for me. The length of time it took me to read this book shouldn't be taken as an indicator of its quality. Instead, it's just an indicator of my life right now. I'm always busy with school and when I'm not doing math homework, I'm in desperate need of a nap. Because of the mental and physical exhaustion I put myself through in school, I've been in a reading slump which I've mentioned on the blog before. I hated feeling like maybe I couldn't read anymore.

But it seems as though finishing In the Afterlight catapulted me out of this slump. I went on to immediately read four books back to back. Reading felt easy and normal again and I couldn't be happier about that. The books I read were Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan, The Museum of Intangible Things by Wendy Wunder, Schizo by Nic Sheff, and Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando. I really liked all of these books and you should definitely take a look at them. I'm planning on posting a full review of Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel and making a post about The Museum of Intangible Things and Schizo that talks more about mental illness in young adult literature.

Hopefully this streak of reading a book a day continues and I'll be sure to let you guys know about any books I read that are just too fantastic not to share.

College Decisions

Today I received my financial aid package from the university other than my local one that was most likely to give me the most aid. And it still wasn't enough. This means that I'll almost definitely be staying in Birmingham for college. While my top choice school is all the way in Philadelphia, I'm not as bummed about staying in town ass I previously thought I would be. Over the past few months, I've been warming to the idea of staying in the city for college and now, having made this decision, I feel pretty good about it. I'll be able to keep my current job and be able to keep volunteering at the Birmingham Crisis Center. I also have a friend who will be going to the same college and another who might be my roommate next year, which is really exciting. This also allows me to graduate with as few student loans as possible. This may not be the most fun post with all the talk about money, but I'm excited! Why I Started This Blog

Reading and writing are my two great loves and I especially love reading about girls. I also feel that girls don't appear enough in popular media. I've loved books all my life and one of my favorite things is sharing the books I love with other people. I'm also hoping that young girls find this blog and that I can make it easier for them to find characters they can relate to. I also hope to write about a wide range of books and characters and help readers see a point of view they might not have seen before. I want this blog to start a discussion between me and my readers about the ways girls are represented in books and so I want my readers to feel free to comment on any of my posts.
