I want part of this blog to be dedicated to celebrating authors who write about girls and do it well and I especially want to celebrate female authors who write about their fellow women. This is the first in a series of posts celebrating some of my favorite female authors.
The first author I wanted to highlight is Sarah Rees Brennan. This probably doesn't come as much of a surprise since her novel Unspoken was the first book I reviewed for this blog. Part of what makes Sarah Rees Brennan's female characters stand out is the fact that there are so many of them. Despite the fact that her debut novel is told from the point of view of a male character, the majority of her work still focuses on the points of view of girls. Her first novel, The Demon's Lexicon, introduces the character of Mae who goes on to narrate one of the novels in the series. Another character in the series is Sin. The two girls are different but they are both strong characters who stand up for themselves and take control of their lives. Rees Brennan's co-written novel Team Human is written from the point of view of Mel, a female fencer. Rees Brennan's most recent series, The Lynburn Legacy, begins with the point of view of Kami Glass and later adds the point of view of Holly Prescott.
Sarah Rees Brennan's female characters are all their own fully-formed people and none of them serve as foils for male characters and while some of them are the love interests of male characters, that is never their sole purpose which I have to admit is refreshing. What may be my favorite thing is that these characters are friends and are never competitive and catty the way girls can sometimes be made to seem to be.
I want to know who your favorite female authors are. Tell me who I should celebrate next in the comments.
